In the children’s story Charlotte’s Web, the process of change
was explained by the spider languishing. Our time as Global Volunteers in Crete
has now been languishing, too. The tourist shops in Amadoura have been closing,
the hotels have been closing, the restaurants and bars have been closing, and
the numerous car rental stores have as well. Actually, our special hotel will
also soon be closing, too. As our time here closes, it is a time to reflect on
“who we are and why we are here,” as stated with a British accent to us each
morning by our fearless leader, Sam.

Our Global Volunteer goals have been both personal and team oriented. We
certainly have expanded our horizons by utilizing car, bus, and walking
opportunities to explore not only our local area, but also other areas of this
amazing county. Our personal goals have been as diverse as Lynn enjoying
finding early morning coffee shops and Betty and Perry driving to small
villages and shopping for shoes for their granddaughters. Our insights have
been impacted by the precious experiences of working with an amazing master
teacher, Martina, along with the children and teens enrolled in her school. One
insight we have gleaned is clear, children and teens who learn English can have
expanded future opportunities.

In two short weeks we certainly realize we have not changed the world or
the country of Greece. However, we can
certainly smile and share with our families, friends, and even strangers in the
future that our lives as Global Volunteers have been changed about this big
world, this beautiful country, and the wonderful Cretan people. And, just
possibly, some Cretan children and their families will have some positive
memories of three Americans who came to Crete as Global Volunteers to teach
English.

We are all enjoying the excellent location of Amadoura. Access to the
archeological sights, the dynamic city of Heraklion, the lovely beaches, and the
mountain backdrop are all making this an exceptional experience. The students
continue to be a joy to work with. Tonight in addition to going over their
lessons, we snuck out for a snack in Gazi and had one of students’ brother perform
some traditional Greek dance steps for us. Everyone is eager to keep us engaged
and entertained and it’s working! Put simply…I love Crete.

Another day in paradise. The weather forecast indicates a little rain
tomorrow, we’ll see.

Today Betty and Perry visited the Historical Museum of Crete. This was a
really great adventure. The
presentations were very educational, especially the exhibits about World War
II. During our visit we noticed a photography crew taking photographs of many
exhibits and conducting an interview with a person who appeared to be the
museum curator. We had a snack break on the museum balcony (overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea) while the crew was also there. We talked with them and
learned they are from Belgrade, Serbia and are filming a documentary program
called “Postcard” for a Serbian television channel. They are spending three
weeks on Crete on this project. We visited for 15 to 20 minutes exchanging
information.

During the afternoon we stopped at a shop that sold special signs and
older license plates. We had them engrave a little sign that says ‘air
conditioning’ in Greek for Perry’s workshop.
Another stop we made will probably be a highlight of our trip, as it was
at a store that sells uniforms and accessories for the police. We were able to
obtain some official police shirts and hats and arm patches for our son, an
officer with the California Highway Patrol. Law enforcement officers like to
obtain items from other agencies. We also gave them a CHP arm patch that was
mounted on the wall of the store before we left.

Again, teaching went well. A couple of the students that had minimal
interest in previous classes were more interested and participated more
willingly. Learning new vocabulary words is a challenge and some words can be
tough, like ‘bulb’, but they work on it with a good attitude.

How can a Monday in Crete get any better? The weather was warm with a
slight breeze and three new friends drove along, experiencing a new adventure.
The day included visiting with a tailor of Greek men’s traditional costumes and
his father. The tailor showed us how to wrap a scarf around Perry’s head to
make him Greek. Down the road from the tailor shop was another village. Yes, a
store going out of business had a 50%-off sale on jewelry and accessories. (Betty
took a long look in that store.) Down the road further was a monastery that was
a true treasure. The complex included a large museum of church and local
artifacts. The number of historical icons on display was breathtaking. The
complex included a nunnery, a very old beautiful church, a gift store, a
hospital, a home for aging nuns, and an orphanage for about 60 children. And
yes, further down the road was our original destination, the ancient ruins of
Festos. We were able to wander around in such an amazing piece of history.

The students at school continue to make us laugh as they enjoy being
kids. It seems their opportunity to speak English with English-speaking
strangers is not really difficult but very welcomed and getting easier even
within the few days we have been part of their lives. Tonight as we were
leaving, one girl called out, “Tootles.”

The weekend was great! We visited churches, Agia Nicholas, and other
great sights in the region. We enjoyed a gourmet dinner in Heraklion hosted by
Matina. Her two children, Nathlie and Nicko, joined us so we had the
opportunity to practice English and they went over a few Greek phrases for us. The warmth of the hotel staff
and everyone we are in contact with is making this trip a true joy.

As reported earlier, we have been blessed with great weather. If
anything, it is a bit warm, but not by much. Betty and I went to the
architectural museum specializing in the Knossis Palace materials. This museum
is completing a total remodel with half of it completed to date. The sections
available for viewing are spectacular! Lynn also experienced successful
adventures in the Heraklion area.

Our teaching assignment tonight went well. However, we possibly caused a
delay in specific lesson progress. This is because Betty and I basically had a
time of cultural discussions with our ninth-grade students. We discussed everything
from artichokes to orange pie to Doritos nachos during movie events. Two of our
students also treated us to a presentation of their mandolin skills. What an
absolute treat!

Yes, indeed we have been truly blessed. Oh my, where to begin? Let us
start with birds singing, blue skies, beautiful scenery, and the opportunity to
end each day with young English learners.
Today the bonus for the team members was a memorable trip to another
local area where we enjoyed archeological wine making and ruins complete with a
guard who spoke very little but we got his message. Further along our trip,
while we were enjoying a late morning beverage at a small café, the owner
shared some pieces of her homemade cake along with a conversation about her
life.

After breakfast Betty, Perry, and I boarded the Cretan bus for the busy metropolis
of Heraklion. We split up so some of us
could shop while others explored the Museum of History and enjoyed lunch.

The evening at Matina’s English school went well. We took turns going
over vocabulary and the alphabet as well as having the students tell stories.
They really seem to enjoy working with us and we are enjoying learning about
their hobbies and interests. They seem to like all the same television shows,
music, and hobbies as American teenagers.

Another day in paradise, 76 degrees Fahrenheit and clear. This morning
Betty and Perry took a trip to visit the Knossos Palace. What an educational
adventure, learning about thousands of years of history. Lynn went to Iraklio
in search of a Starbucks and was diverted to many other local shops in addition
to her original quest.

This evening it was back to Matina’s English school. The introductory
period was over and we were working with the students on their lessons and
quizzes. They are all serious about their work, but, at the same, have a sense
of humor and a very cooperative attitude. We split the groups up a little so we
had more opportunities for personal contact.

What a way to start our official work week - beautiful blue skies, a
slight breeze, and a team of three with willing spirits. Perry and I went on a
short morning adventure. We saw a monastery, El Greco Museum, beautiful
countryside with citrus trees, and goats and sheep. A tour book could not have
done better.

Tonight we went to the English program school. It’s just down the road

A bright sunny day on beautiful Crete, Betty, Perry, Team Leader, Sam,
and I enjoyed orientation poolside at the hotel. We got to know each other,
discussed our goals for the two weeks (experiential, personal; expand horizons,
brighten future) and learned about the after-school English program we will be
working on.

We have grown attached to these children with their wide range of abilities, characters, and quirks. The day began with a word search that soon became very competitive, with all the children wanting to complete their search first. There were three different searches on the go at once so some teamwork developed. Such was the enthusiasm to complete the task that it extended into two periods.

Just before third recess we were privileged to have a visit from the Deputy Mayor of Gazi and his secretary. They presented us with certificates thanking us for volunteering. The children from the junior class gave a dazzling performance of “Gangnam Style” led by Sam's daughters, Millie and Gabriella.

With the day coming to an end, I played hide and seek with our children. They were very good, helping me to learn their rules and telling me when it was clear to make a dash for base. Mary Sue was left the onerous task of packing all the books and supplies ready to bring back to the hotel.

As the children drifted off home, it was with a lump in my throat I bade them farewell. It has been a real privilege to spend time with them and both Mary Sue and I hope in some small way we have helped their English and encouraged them to keep working on it.

Looking at our team goals of philanthropy, opportunity, learning, and culture, we can say most definitely that these have all been achieved, but without the help, support, advice and general good craic of Sam, the experience would have been a lesser one. It is fitting to say what wonderful hosts the whole of the Handakas family have been, welcoming us into what feels like their home. We are grateful for AC. We showed photos and asked the students about our dinner and the traditional dancing in the reconstructed village up the mountain. They did some activities about clocks and time, acted out verbs, (which they enjoyed), and used the story cubes to practice expressing an idea or an event in English. Since today we had eleven students, the two groups were a bit large and kids in my group grew impatient while the more hesitant students hammered out a story. They shouted out responses to a very quick run through of addition facts. To complete the Gruffalo story experience, Lesley showed the class online images of the Gruffalo and compared them to the pictures the kids had made.

In response to the "babyness" comment about the books we brought from the hotel dining room corner dedicated to Global Volunteers’ resources, we brought in a fresh supply of books which created some interest.

In the afternoon Lesley had a heavenly massage at a local spa and reported that well-oiled feet in flip flops makes for a very slow walk home. I took a nap.

We ate our delicious dinner of salad, meatballs, and French fries near the pool. Little granddaughter, Maria, once again provided great entertainment for the family members who were also enjoying the beautiful evening. Sam is an effective bridge between the hotel, the volunteers, and other guests. As others have mentioned in previous blogs, it is difficult sometimes to distinguish between employees and guests. How will we say goodbye to family, our Greek family?

We split the class into two groups and we each accompanied a group on the search for various things we had written on a list, such as something of a certain color, hard, soft, small, tall, rectangular, square, numbers 1-10, etc. When the group had found something, Mary Sue and I took a photo of it with the iPad.

After recess we completed the list and reconvened in the classroom to show our photos to the other team and the children had to say why it had been taken. This task prompted plenty of English speaking, observation, and imagination. One boy in particular in Mary Sue's group showed great imagination when for the numbers he suggested the children lay on the ground and form their bodies into the shape of the numbers.

Later we had them create little booklets from a single A4 page and we asked them to draw themselves, their favorite holiday, what they would like to be when they grew up, their favorite game, how they get to school, and their favorite subject at school (recess wasn't allowed). Again with this task, the children had plenty of opportunity to speak English with us as we went around the room asking them questions about their drawings. We kept the booklets and in the evening Mary Sue wrote a little review of them on the back cover to present them to the students in the morning.

In the evening Sam took us to the traditional Cretan mountain village of Arolithos where we saw houses as they would have been in years gone by. We had plenty of chances to apply our photographer's eye and take some pictures. The little church was especially pretty and the interior was beautifully painted. The square was laid out as it would be for a Cretan wedding or Christening celebration and as we took our seats for dinner, the lira and bazouki struck up the distinctive music. Throughout the meal various dances were performed with the audience of various nationalities given a chance to join in. I think we all enjoyed the dance to Zorba the Greek music and the "manly" dances of the Cretan "shepherds." There was much toe-tapping and hand clapping. Our wonderful evening was rounded off in the traditional way, with a raki nightcap. Another of our Global Volunteers Team Goals achieved: CULTURE.

In anticipation of our proposed afternoon visit to Knossos, we asked the class to tell us what Lesley and I should know before our visit. It appeared that all had been there, but it was one of our advanced students who taught us about the labyrinth and retold the story of the mythological Minotaur. He had the class (and us) spellbound. Every so often, he would search in vain for the right phrase or word, and then announce, "Just a minute" as he raced out the door and down the sidewalk to ask Sam for the correct English word. The class, which normally has to be in constant motion, waited patiently for the runner to return. Sometimes he just hung onto the doorknob, leaned out the door, and called out to Sam. After a while he suggested that they draw pictures of the Minotaur and labyrinth. Brilliant idea! Although this had been our intent all along, we let the idea come from a student.

If only we could have replicated that experience for the next three classes! :) We played the fly swatter game using the two bodies we drew on the board. They named the correct body part as they swatted it on the board. To make it more challenging, Lesley used sentences like this: I kick a ball with this; I hear with this, etc. We are engaged in a constant delicate balancing act between being somewhat orderly and just getting on with the game and letting the students arrange themselves in the most advantageous lineup so as to beat their opponent. Having said that, they have learned that the game will not continue until all eyes are on the teacher and it is absolutely silent. They shush themselves. Lesley is going to do a follow-up tomorrow on the charming Gruffalo story she read today so she may mention that in her journal entry.

We try to alternate active and quieter activities. We ended the day by playing Go Fish and Bingo in small groups. We have what we think is a great activity planned for tomorrow.

Lesley and I took two buses to get to Knossos. It was a thrill to see the ancient Minoan site and look forward to sharing some photos with them tomorrow. If I were to return to Crete to volunteer, I would bring books of simply retold Greek myths. Today I really wished we had had some books of myths to share with our class.

After our pizza and Greek salad dinner, Sam shared village traditions, rituals, and celebrations surrounding the birth of a child, the mother's confinement, godfathers and godmothers, baptism, courtship, engagements, weddings, gift giving, death, burial, period of bereavement, and memorial services.

The leftover skins are then used to make raki. We were shown his vegetable garden where the wonderful salads we have eaten are grown. Such a variety peppers, auvergne, avocado, tomatoes, and okra, to name but a few.

At school it was a typical Monday, I would guess, and the children were, to quote Mary Sue, "squirrelly." We began the class with only three boys, but as we began to reassess our program for the day, some more children arrived and we ended up with eight. We now had three Manos and two Theodosis. Our first period was spent asking the children what they had done over the weekend. Some still struggle to comprehend the question and answer idea and even when asked to repeat a suggested answer don't seem to understand that they should repeat what we have said.

We then split into groups and using flashcards asked the children to identify the subject in sentence form like “This is a ...” Mary Sue was so pleased when one of the less able children shouted out “This is a...” for several pictures.

After recess we learned the true meaning of flexibility, which is one of the definitions we had decided makes a good volunteer. Our plan had been to talk about the different rooms in a house and what we do in each room, and for the children then to draw a basic floor plan. However, most of the children wanted only to draw their bedrooms, but this then led to the vocabulary of wardrobe, drawer, shelves, desk, and toy box. So whilst the lesson wasn't how we had envisaged, the children led us down a path of equal benefit and each in turn was able to describe to us on a one-on-one basis their own rooms from their drawings. If they didn't know the word for an item of furniture, they were able to tell us its use and we then could write the word on the board so that they could label their drawings.

The remaining two periods were split between whole class song and rhymes and smaller group bingo and reading. We have noticed that the children do tend to sit quietly and listen when being read a story. This is something we hope to expand on in future lessons. With such a range of ages and abilities it is sometimes difficult to keep the attention and focus of all whilst still making it fun, but it does give me a sense of satisfaction when the children respond well to a lesson and talk. Smaller groups seem to draw better, clearer responses.

In the afternoon we relaxed and planned some lessons for the following days. After yet another delicious dinner, Mary Sue showed us some of her impressive photos she had taken of Rethymnon and some of its citizens. We headed to bed early to read up on Knossos before our planned visit tomorrow.

The "they", I think, could mean teachers or students.

Entry submitted by: Lesley M Bjorklundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09655158329111563615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216268326032971060.post-80170582520397998162013-08-25T20:33:00.000+05:302013-09-26T00:39:02.029+05:30Ready for Week 2 to begin!

During our first week with our
class of older students, my teaching partner, Lesley, and I focused on speaking
and conversation, not on writing. For some, it was challenging to answer simple
questions; they tended to repeat what we said, rather than answer the question.
On the other hand, they can talk about pictures they have drawn. We will
continue to work on questions and answers and conversation.

We began by using picture word cards. After ascertaining that they knew the
words, we held up a card and asked, "What is this?" The expected
answer was "This is ..." We did other work with the picture cards -
they alphabetized the cards and they put them in categories such as food.

Lesley read a simple, charming
book about a puppy, which they enjoyed. I then asked for them to tell what
was happening in the pictures. The next day I read it again, rather quickly,
and then I reread it and had them join in by finishing the sentences.

Another day Lesley read a book about a monster. They were attentive listeners
as was I as I enjoy her Northern Irish accent. They then drew monsters and told
the class about their monster. I discovered they have a need to finish what
they start and will miss outdoor recess time to do so. The next day, we did an
exercise which required them to follow directions. After their paper was folded
in fourths, each drew a monster head, then folded the paper back to hide the
head and passed the paper to the next person who drew the shoulders and so on.
They did not like that activity. They prefer to do their own artwork.

Another day they folded their
paper into four rectangles and drew pictures of themselves, their family, their
favorite food, and what they enjoy doing. They then told about their pictures.

We divided into two groups to use the story cubes. I had the two most advanced
students. Their sophisticated use of the English language was imaginative and
fun to observe. The verb story cubes proved to be a challenge for some. We will
continue to encourage them to speak. How they feel at the moment influences
their level of participation.

Two of our team members have departed. Lesley took a bus to Aghio Nikolaos and
from there took a ferry to the island of Spinalonga on Saturday. She was
inspired to take this trip by Victoria Hislop's book, The Island, a story about the lepers sequestered on this island,
some years ago. On Sunday, she walked to Heraklion. Round trip, it is close to
twenty kilometers. On Saturday. I took the bus to Rethymnon where I stayed in a
lovely hotel near the sea, ate great food, and enjoyed walking the narrow
alleys, taking photos. We are happy to be back "home" as was the
hotel staff. I received greetings and a hug from one of the women.

We are ready for week two to begin!

we had the kids create their own personal books that included all the

it was a wonderful experience. The kids were very grateful and drew pictures

Today
the kids did many different activities. They learned different English verbs
such as “eat”, “be hungry”, and “laugh.” With these newly learned verbs we
had the girls compete with the boys as we tested their knowledge. During the
second half of class time we went over common phrases and sentences with the
kids such as "How are you?" and "My name is…" These kids
are extraordinarily bright and have caught on rather quickly to all our lesson
plans. It has been an amazing experience to watch these kids so eager to learn
and see their competitive spirit come to life. Looking forward to another day
with the kids.

For
the first day of class we started off by introducing ourselves. Shortly
after, the kids learned to spell their names on construction paper. Then we
played a picture game that was very interactive where the kids came to the
board one by one and drew a picture. The class then would say what the picture
was in English. The first to shout the correct answer in English was rewarded
with a sticker.

During
second period we had the kids say what they wanted to be when they grew up. We
then gave them the English name to their chosen profession. They drew a picture
of what they wanted to be and spelled the English name of the occupation on
their picture.

We
finished the day playing an alphabet game and putting together puzzles that
fostered identifying English words and forming short sentences.

the day was a great success. We were able to identify the level the kids were

food, and hospitality. The hotel is an extension of their home and we have been
accepted with open arms. Each meal has been prepared straight from Susanna’s

Looking at the weeks ahead we will support each other to cultivate opportunity,
philanthropy, culture, and learning. We will do this by embodying
characteristics such as punctuality, flexibility, working together, sharing, supporting,
respecting, learning, being open and honest, being constructive, having a sense

It seems that I have
drawn the difficult task of writing the last entry for our team. It indeed seems impossible that this
experience, so long anticipated, has now come to a close.

Following the reading
of the journal for May 17 by Cathy, we enjoyed a fine presentation by Sam on
Cretan traditions surrounding engagements, weddings, births, christenings, and
funerals. We learned a lot.

Subsequently we tended
to departure preparations – last minute laundry which, in spite of cool cloudy
weather did actually dry, then packing, showering, reviewing the day’s lesson
plans, and filling out evaluation forms.

Marty and Cathy
enjoyed their final lunch at their favorite taverna and indeed the waiter did
NOT have to take their order -- he knew
without asking: dolmathes, tzatziki, fried zucchini slices, white wine and
Greek coffee. And yes, AFTER the bill
was settled came loukamathes and raki.

Students gathered at
5:00. The little ones presented their
two skits, and reviewed the week’s work with various games. Cathy and the teenagers did word searches and
scrabble. Again it was lively and

Another beautiful day in Amoudara.
What a beautiful sky – not a cloud in sight.

Marty met Sotiria, Eirini and Maria for their early morning walk. Along the way, they introduced Marty to
various herbs and how they were used in Greek cuisine. Marty, in turn, helped them with their
English.

Marty ventured out enroute to Knossos
by bus. Cathy stayed in Amoudara taking
a stroll in town, dined with the hotel staff, prepared lessons and then relaxed
by the pool. She also did some
translating for potential guests of the hotel.

Marty returned from her adventure and said it was worth the trip. She was glad she made the effort. An unexpected highlight was meeting a 14 or
15 year old young man with a skateboard at the bus stop. Words exchanged were small at the beginning;
however, during the bus ride from Knossos to
Heraklion, the young man sat by Marty and asked “who is the favorite singer in
the U.S.
… Justin Bieber? When asked what his
name was, he replied “Yiannis” and a friendship developed. He then took out his ipod and shared an
earpiece with Marty. He played small
selections of music from Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Elvis Presley, Frank
Sinatra, Mariah Carey; and then, he played in its entirely “We are the
world”. Yiannis also showed Marty where to exit for the continuing bus
trip to Amoudara.

In the early afternoon, Cathy took the teenage students to Heaven where
they enjoyed various sweet treats (crepes with ice cream; waffles with ice
cream and chocolate syrup). As a
continuing teaching exercise, the students were introduced to a new game where
one person says a word and the next person has to say a new word using the last
letter of the first word. The game was
very competitive and at the end, it was a tie.

The day dawned, beautiful as always, at Hotel Handakas. Marty met Soutiria, Eirine and Maria for
their early morning walk, Marty and Maria chatting while the two sisters
pinched leaves off of trees and restaurants’ herb plantings, scrunching them up
and handing them to Marty to smell, explaining in what culinary specialty they
are used.

Cathy (henceforth known as our Greek Goddess), helped Karl pack, and we
bid him adieu with good wishes for safe travels home and a speedy recovery.

Paul kindly gave Cathy and Marty a ride into Gazi town where they
browsed in the shops of Markos and Artemis, Soutiria’s and Demetrios’ son and
daughter-in-law. Cathy purchased a
Bodyworks t-shirt from Marcos, and Marty a little outfit for granddaughter
Mallory’s 3rd birthday. They
enjoyed the hike back past Maria and Nikos’ house. Gazi is a quiet, pretty town with nice shops.

Lunch was once again delicious: a fresh-from-the-garden salad (AND
dolmathes from the garden’s grape leaves) and, oh yum, oh yum, tyropita (filo
pastry filled with feta and kefalotiri cheeses).

The students arrived and classes began. Marty worked inside and outside
with Aliki and Rafaella. Activities included vocabulary of clothing using
sticker books, flashcards, and the clothing the girls were wearing. Games were “Slam it” and “Jump the Line” and the ever popular “Simon Says.” Cathy enjoyed her session with her teenage
friends, playing “Password” and using word searches. The students are always very eager, involved,
quick and competitive.

No lesson for the staff nor conversation with Maria and Nikos tonight, as
Sam squired Cathy and Marty off to a wonderful evening at a restored mountain
village/restaurant/gift shop/entertainment venue. The meal was similar to what would be served
at a wedding or other festivity. The
music and dance program was spectacular. Instruments were the lyra and
bouzouki. First there were traditional
Greek dances followed by Cretan dances, with the dancers in beautiful
traditional dress. Many in the audience
joined in. It was a memorable evening.
Global Volunteershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153973961115698118noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216268326032971060.post-70211352043777181362012-05-15T21:36:00.000+05:302012-06-11T21:39:24.463+05:30First Goodbye

Marty met Susanne, Irene and Maria for their daily early morning
walk. These walks not only served as a
good form of exercise but an opportunity to learn more about the surrounding
area and gave Susanne, Irene and Maria an opportunity to practice their
English.

After breakfast, Cathy read Karl’s journal. Karl was not feeling well and was resting in
his room. He later joined the group and
indicated that he could not continue with the program because he had a
reoccurrence of gout and was very uncomfortable. Cathy made new air reservations for his
departure. Sam notified Karl’s wife that
he would be returning home. Additionally, she notified the Global Volunteers
home office in Minnesota
of the situation.

Marty needed to change her air reservations to ensure an earlier arrival
in Paris. The girls ventured by bus to the
airport. Marty was successful in
changing her reservations with a more ideal arrival time in Paris.
We took the bus back to Amoundara and lunched at our favorite
taverna. Again, we enjoyed dolmathes,
fried zucchini, a glass of wine and Greek coffee. The taverna treated us to loukomathes and
raki – because we are now regulars. They
even know our order by heart—no menus needed!

The students arrived. Marty
continued to tutor Alice and Rafaella.
You could certainly tell the girls were really into the lesson. Cathy played a game called Talking Cards with
the teenage students. This proved to be
a great conversational game, giving each student different topics to
discuss. Later the scrabble game
continued. Anthony is still the reigning
champ but Leah came close to winning.

After our teaching session, Marty met with Maria and Mr. Nikos for their
English lesson. Cathy met with the hotel
staff continuing their English lesson.
